Hervey Bay Regional Gallery connects communities with contemporary visual arts, ideas, and environmental heritage through meaningful experiences, building capability, expanding creativity and leading local sustainability change.

It needed a brand to compete on a regional and even national stage, giving the gallery credibility and place it firmly on the map of touring Australian artists.

At the same time however, the gallery needed to have a sense of place and welcoming – something that will draw in the locals and visitors alike, encouraging connections to and between artists, community and culture.

It was also critical that Badtjala culture is embedded in the brand in a recognisable way – to honour and acknowledge the region’s first peoples with respect and to reflect Fraser Regional Council’s inclusion of Badtjala culture on a regional scale.

We engaged with local Elders and were able to capture some fascinating insights from them that really enriched and added impetus to our creative direction.

This concept was based around the three lines of lore in Badtjala culture. The lore has been illustrated by using three lines. This  has been juxtaposed with the semi-circular form of a yarning circle. In Badtjala culture this is how a yarning circle is represented. The custom pattern and supporting colour palette represents the ocean meeting the shore.
